I wonder how this could work for a more narrative campaign. Maybe rolling a 6 gets you an encounter with an NPC that can help you with your goal, 5 would be a clue to find that next helpful NPC, 4 would just be something neutral happens and the PCs have to try their best to see how they can spin it in their favor. Maybe the transient resource to expire is leads (in the marketing / clues sense) which they can replenish via finding clues during encounters. We might be able to use that same mechanic for fatigue or we could also tie gold to their ability to keep alive their leads (they have to pay their informants to get info). The setback would be a more hostile encounter that is dangerous but which they may also be able to perhaps gain some more leads or gold if they are very smart and lucky.

There is an entry in the location tables called "Gas vent". I've rolled it a couple times now, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what that is supposed to be. A hydrothermal vent on the ocean floor? Google is no help.

Re: Closing doors. It's mildly important if (a) navigation is significant and (b) mapping is occurring, because a closed door that should be open can mislead about whether or not you've been in an area before. It's moderately significant when used in tandem with the rule about only being able to open doors on specific rolls + random encounters (so that you're chewing up time trying to open doors that swung shut behind you). This can get kinda silly pretty easily, though. It can be VERY important if you're running away from something and discover that the door has shut behind you. Or if the door is trapped and the trap resets when it closes.

5e is a great combat simulator with bare bones social/exploration mechanics, whichs makes it very easy to adapt to play various different scenarios, and dimension 20 has proved that time and time again. There's nothing wrong with playing other games, I love vampire the madquerade, but 5e is just fine.

It would be good for a video game or people coming from 5th ed. It definitely doesn't have an old school DnD style. Being simplistic doesn't even make it a good OSR rpg. The design and art are very good though. There are a few good ideas and other elements too.

Andreja here from Print N Play games. Amazing idea that one hex contains so much, we have done a similar thing where we add mini stories to a hex, but it was just one mini story per hex combined with a terrain type which also adds flavour. But I like when things are specific. Great job!

Hi Ben, I am a big fan of the channel. I purchased The Waking of Willowby Hall. Although the design is fantastic I didn't enjoy GMing it too much. Because of the many rooms I had to describe way too much. I realy felt I had to cover too much room describing and took away quite a bit from the screentime of my players. Is there a good lets play of The Waking of Willowby Hall that I can watch? Geetings Frederic

finally received my knave 2e kickstarter books and I had no idea that Summer's End was gonna end up being my favorite out of all my rewards. Super excited to try these out, I love how there's just enough written here to put you on the right track but has plenty of room for the DM to modify where needed. I'm hoping to run one of these adventures really soon, I feel like Alchemist's Repose would be perfect for a classic dungeon crawl for my mix of new and more experienced players!

I think your last point is the most important, and can be expounded into something that ought to be said more often. Dimension 20, Critical Role, Glass Cannon, Adventure Zone, Not Another DnD Podcast -- these folks are professionals. You are not a professional. You are not Brennan Lee Mulligan. (Unless you are, in which case: hi, I love Noise Bois and Dadlands!) The systems that work best for a podcast are not necessarily the ones that will work best for you and the groups you cobble together at your table. You MIGHT need a system that has more narrative mechanics, or you might need one that needs more combat mechanics. Or maybe both -- maybe neither! Too many people go straight to DnD 5E because that's what gets the most attention. But I think it gives new folks the wrong idea: that this is what TTRPGs are and must be. And it's not! I think that's part of why people make the complaints that Brennan got here: the more DnD 5E gets used by these big groups, the more "inescapable" the system becomes. But there are games with better combat (Pathfinder 2e, DnD 4E) and games with better narrative tools (Powered by the Apocalypse, FATE). There are systems that do different genres (Blades in the Dark, Monster of the Week, Traveler) and some that do the same fantasy genre with a different focus (Dungeon World). BLeeM can make things work for his groups with DnD 5E. But that might not be what works best for you and your group -- and you'll never know that until you branch out.

Old School gaming was a game to get as much XP as possible during the session. So random encounters were a game mechanic that players accepted would reduce the amount of gold / XP they could get. New school gaming is about being as cool as possible during every session. With that player goal I don't see why they would random encounters or any encounter that was not setup for them to show how cool they are. Old school is playing a game; New school is player fantasy fulfillment

Awesome, Ben! I think what I found most intriguing was the idea of many things to do within one hex, as well as the simplicity of the 1-page dungeon. I tend to run a small-scale campaign world, where everything typically occurs within the boundaries of a single kingdom / country. So a 1-hex campaign area would be a great starting point, and could easily be expanded on as the game progresses. Thanks for the inspiration!

It make sense, but also can lean to some problematic. I play a rpg to be someone who I'm not. In D&D there are rules for magic because they tell you what you can do with it, and most time a lot of magic if you are smart enough you can use as a tool to resolve a encounter, that make you feel smart even if you just use a spell. In another example I am not very good a words, so when my master put something like a "diplomatic encounter" i end up letting other talk or just stay in my confort zone, making a character that maybe was strong and confident, silent or too gentile and reasonable. If the DM want to guess what you need to tell this could kill the roleplay and become a puzzle game D&D have just a "role persuasion" in this occasion and some very specific rules, so most of the time you as a player need to fill it like when you have a blank page. There are systems that make combat like a duel, like legend of 5 rings, that give you the freedom to try but also the restriction (in this case stress, glory and honor) to stay in line.
